Chapter 33
Most of the pack was already present by the time Niall and I arrived. I walked up to the table my family had colonized, Lucas, Storm, and Lori in their midst. Liam was standing in the middle of the room, conducting quiet conversations with a few animated shifters. Grantâs father and sister were among the disgruntled huddle.
They kept casting dirty glares toward Lori, who sat half-hidden between Nate and Lucas, while I headed toward my father.
âHowâs the head, Pinecone?â He bobbed his leg, making Storm jiggle as though he were horseback riding.
âAll better, Daddy.â
âYouâre not saying that because you want to spare me, right?â
âNo. I swear.â
As though heâd heard my fatherâs concern, Darren walked over to us with his wife, and parted my clean hair to take a look at my stitches. âStitches held, and youâre no longer bleeding. Howâs the temple?â
âMuch better too.â I smiled to reassure him.
As he exchanged words with my father about what wine to pair with roasted lamb, and his wife fussed over Storm, a familiar voice asked, âWhat happened to your head?â
I turned in my chair, found Grant staring at the back of it. âNothing. I just fell.â
âYou got stitches, Nikki, so itâs not nothing.â
For all his faults, Grant had never been pitiless. Even cowards could be considerate. âI swear, Iâm fine.â
As I checked the room to see if everyone had arrived, I found Liamâs eyes grinding a hole in the back of Grantâs skull.
Everyone, please settle down so we may begin. Liamâs terse voice boomed, dimming all ambient noise.
Chairs scraped the slate flooring. The younger shifters flopped cross-legged onto the floor. Others leaned against the wall or the bar or against each other. The last time Iâd been at Pondside with the entire pack was when we were still Creeks. How fast and avidly weâd adopted our new heritage. Then again, most of us had never liked being Creeks.
Iâd been born an Aspen, and then, six years ago, Cassandra Morgan had walked onto the compound with her puny pack and challenged our Alpha. The fight lasted mere seconds, yet I remembered the gory battle in vivid detail. Remembered the ensuing battles, because many Aspens had challenged her. All had lost their lives. Grantâs father had longed for a brawl, but his grandmother, a mighty frightening female, had put her paw down.
I had no doubt that, had Grantâs dad been a decade younger, he wouldâve challenged Liam. Heâd apparently tried to get his kids to do it, but neither possessed David Hollisâs political aspirations. Camilla was too much of an introvert, and Grant too irresponsible. I mean, the guy couldnât deal with me and my busted knee; how in the world would he have dealt with a pack and all of its issues?
âIâve been accused of deception by many of you.â Liam prowled the narrow space that remained between the throng of bodies. âMy intentions were never to mislead you but to mislead the perpetrator to buy myself time to corner them. Although
